BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The East Carolina track and field squad was led by Kayla Padgett and Montrell Morrow in both weight throw events during the first day of the Conference USA Indoor Championship. At the end of day one, the ECU men were ranked third with 29 points, while the women were in fifth place with 20 points.

Padgett won the women's weight throw with an ECU school record mark of 20.03m (65-08.75) to lead the Lady Pirates. She shattered her previous personal record by 1.72m (5-07.00) and bested the former ECU school record mark of 18.80m (61-08.00) which was set in 1999 by Michelle Clayton. Following Padgett's career performance were Kaylee Redon (15.76m; 51-08.50), Ashley Clausen (15.55m; 51-00.25), Chloe Early (15.52m; 50-11.00), and Lauren Lubarski (13.25m; 43-05.75).

For the second year in a row, Morrow won the men's weight throw. This season, his mark of 19.95m (65-05.50) was good enough for tops in the conference. He finished ahead of teammates Thomas Lehman and Adam Manns. Lehman garnered a personal best mark of 15.46m (50-08.75) to finish eighth in the event and place ninth on the ECU Indoor Top 10 list. Manns finished in 11th place with a mark of 13.48m (44-02.75).
